So, let’s dive deep to explore home basketball drills.

10 Basketball Drills Without a Hoop

Just because you don’t have a hula hoop at home, doesn’t mean you can’t exercise. It is even possible to practice basketball drills without a hoop, court or gymnasium. Here are ten exercises for you.

Force control

10 minutes of hack handling can be a great basketball workout to improve ball handling and conditioning skills. You can do it in a house, park, college, and any open area without a hoop. Here’s how to do the workout.

  • Try jumping jacks for 25 times without a break.
  • Hit the ball low, medium and high right and left for 25 repetitions.
  • Go for side glides for 15 reps.
  • Try forward and left-right combo dribbles for 15 reps each.
  • Jump squat for 15 reps.
  • Try cross-jab reps for 15 reps each.

Each exercise should be followed by 30 to 60 seconds of rest before the next exercise. I recommend ball handling training 3 times a week to give your legs adequate rest. So you can build your basketball conditioning and handling skills in less than a month.

Step aside

Side step practice doesn’t require a hoop, field or gym. Try this practice in your bedroom, your reading room, your terrace and your garden. It helps in developing defense, distance and shooting power. Let’s go through the step by step guide.

  • Dribble the ball once to your left or right.
  • Remove steps 1 to 2.
  • Hold the ball with the correct replacement hand.
  • Try 10 times for left and right side.

Practice side steps 2 to 4 times a week with adequate rest to keep your legs free of excess stress. By practicing this drill, you will get a better balance in the step for an accurate shot.

Drill pivots forward

You need to strengthen your passing ability for timely shots. This is an ideal drill to beat a defender advancing with the ball. Practice forward pivot drilling at home by following these steps.

  • Get back on your way.
  • Turn left or right quickly.
  • Dribble the ball.
  • Move to shooting mode.
  • Repeat the exercise 15 times to the left and right.

You can practice this particular exercise at home 2-3 times a week to avoid unwanted leg and foot injuries. Make sure your right leg quickly moves behind your left leg. And the right foot should be slightly shoulder width in front of your left foot.

Practice side hop footwork

As a professional basketball player, you have to fill the ball to the closest distance to your counter defenders. This helps position you for a good pass to your left or right. It’s as simple as following the steps below.

  • Bounce the ball once you have left and right sides.
  • Dribble the ball with proper hand placement.
  • Hold the ball above your head in a squat style.
  • Try doing 15 repetitions on each side.

Place your dominant foot slightly in front of the rest. Try to keep your feet shoulder-width apart while dribbling the ball. This will help you move with better body balance for the perfect shot. Practice this drill 3 days a week to improve your shooting power.

Shoot a bullet at a wall

Although the wall pull seems simple compared to other exercises, it works well to increase strength and mechanics. It requires no hoop except a ball and a wall. Let’s try wall shots at home, garage and indoors.

  • Get yourself ready with a little footstep.
  • Fix a shooting point on the wall.
  • Hit the ball on the wall with both hands.
  • Catch and through it again immediately.

Fix the shooting point on the wall at least 15 feet above your position. Continue training for 25 times to get good results. You can consider exercise as your daily extra tip.

Ground shooting

Two things are important for any shooter: good ball handling and good shooting form. You can achieve both by practicing shooting on the ground or in bed at home. Also, it offers smooth shooting speed and positive viewing for flawless typing.

  • Lie down on a floor.
  • Hold the ball with both hands.
  • Take the firing position from your forehead.
  • Throw the ball in the air.
  • Grip it on the pads of your hands and fingers instead of your palms.

Exercise for 5-10 minutes daily on the floor or in bed to improve touch, movement, strength and visualization. Try with both hands first, but only your shooting hand afterwards.

Basketball chair shot

If you want to practice shooting accuracy without a hoop, chair basketball shooting is an ideal drill. You need an armless chair and an outdoor space to throw the ball. Follow the steps.

  • Place a chair on a flat floor.
  • Sit in a thigh position in front of the chair.
  • Hold the ball with both hands and kick it in the air.
  • Allow it to return to your mid-thigh position.
  • Grab it and kick the air again.

Repeat the exercise 20 times a day to improve your shooting power and agility. Remember to be flexible in the chair to avoid back pain. Shoot the ball in the air with one finger for a smoother shot.

Basketball line shot

You can improve your basketball shooting accuracy by practicing line shooting on tennis court lines, badminton court lines, sidewalk lines, etc. This is a decent exercise to do without a hoop or a gym. Let’s follow the online shooting tips below.

  • Take your preferred foot position on a line to the right or left.
  • Set a line mark where you want the ball to drop each time.
  • Throw the ball in the air.
  • Check if the ball goes to the same center.

Keep your head up and try to throw the ball at least 15 feet in the air with emphasis on the arc and spine. Repeat the exercise 20 times a day as supplementary exercise for better results.

180 degree shooting

The 180 degree hop shot is ideal when you are looking for a home shooting preparation exercise. This is a great way to improve footwork and shooting agility. Here’s how to conduct the training.

  • Stand against your shooting wall.
  • Bounce the ball to your right first.
  • Turn to your right and catch the ball.
  • Quickly throw the ball towards the shooting wall.
  • Now bounce the ball to your left.
  • Catch the ball back to your left.
  • Ball hit the wall.

You will repeat the exercise in these lanes 10 times on each side. So you can improve your footwork and your shooting ability. Try this three days a week to keep your feet and wrists relaxed.

Basic basketball dribbling

Practice basic dribbling to move the ball quickly, beating your opponent. You can practice the drill at home, in your garden, on the tennis court, and any space other than a hoop. Follow the steps below.

  • Determine the direction of crossing.
  • Dribble the ball right, left and forward as the pitch.
  • Return to the point of departure from your arrival point.
  • Repeat this for at least 5 minutes.
