Newcastle United vs Manchester UnitedErik ten Hag is confident Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford will be available for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Newcastle, live on Sky Sports.

Rashford missed England’s recent Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine after being left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the quarter-final FA Cup final win against Fulham on 19 March.

United manager Ten Haag said: “I’m optimistic. He had to undergo treatment and personal training, but he joined the squad on Friday. We’ve got one more day and hopefully ‘he’ll be available. I think so.’

Rashford was enjoying a break in New York as England won 2-1 in Italy, with Gareth Southgate defending the player’s decision to move to the US.

Ten Haag also backed the move, saying his 27-goal striker deserved a ‘breather’ after a terrific run of games.

“I think it’s positive that he took a break,” Ten Haag said. “I think Rashford has played the most matches in the whole team with Bruno Fernandes.

“I think Manchester United play the most games in the whole of Europe and our internationals are not mostly on the bench, they play the majority.

“So our players are playing the most games and it’s a crazy season, so they also need moments where they can breathe and gather energy.

“For me, it is positive that he has taken this time away from football. I saw him again this week and he showed a lot of energy and a lot of motivation.

“The training with the whole team was a very good session with a lot of spirit, but also with Marcus in particular, so I think it was good.”

Ten Haag gave few details on contract talks with Rashford but was pleased to hear that left-back Luke Shaw was set to sign a new long-term deal.

“If he signs, I don’t know,” the United boss said with a smile. “I’ve never heard of it until now.

“John (Murtough, the club’s director of football) hasn’t informed me yet so I’ll have to wait for him. If it’s true I’ll be really happy.

“We really want to keep him because he is a very important player for our team.”

Casemiro is suspended and substitute goalkeeper Tom Heaton injured for Sunday’s game at St James’ Park, but Anthony Martial could return to the team after a two-month absence with a groin problem.

“He’s been training for two weeks now,” Ten Haag said. “I think he can be in the team for Sunday.”

Man Utd want to make Rashford one of the highest earners

Sky Sports News Senior Reporter Melissa Reddy:

Manchester United’s contract offer for Rashford would reflect his importance by placing him in his highest earning bracket, with both club and player remaining tight-lipped about the situation.

Talks over a new deal are still in their early stages, with the striker’s current terms set to expire at the end of next season. There was “transparency, respect and courtesy” throughout the process.

United activated a one-year extension on Rashford’s contract in December and believe the financial package they are finally offering – but more importantly the club’s management under Ten Haag – will convince him to stay.

The 25-year-old has been Europe’s top goalscorer since the World Cup, with the Dutchman providing coaching and guidance to help Rashford regain his focus and his best form.

The England international’s preference is to stay at Old Trafford and collect more silverware with his boyhood club, but it is understood this is a major turning point in his career and he does not need to rush into a decision. He also made it clear that his choice does not revolve around money.

Paris Saint-Germain chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi, a known admirer of Rashford, previously confirmed in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports: “We are not hiding it, we have spoken before and … interest. But the moment was not a good one for both sides. Time. May be summer, why not?”

With Rashford aiming to finish the season as strong as possible, United are still in the mix for FA Cup and Europa League glory, as well as securing a place in the top four.
