Aljamine Sterling vs. Henry Cejudo

 

Sterling is set to defend his bantamweight title again on Saturday, but attention will be on contender Cejudo, who will return from retirement to reclaim his place at the top of the division.

Cejudo has technically never lost a bantamweight title that he won by knockout against Marlon Moraes in 2019 and then successfully defended against Dominick Cruz in 2020. Instead, he had other plans. Time away from sports and needed to reset.

Whether Cejudo returns to A+ form will be a major question, but there’s no denying that Cejudo’s pedigree and resume are some of the best combat sports have ever seen.

Cejudo won an Olympic gold medal in wrestling in 2008 at the age of 21. He then moved on to professional MMA and eventually won the flyweight title in 2018, upsetting longtime king Demetrius Johnson. And then he soon moved up to bantamweight to dethrone Moraes.

Win or lose on Saturday, Cejudo has nothing more to prove.

Reigning champion Sterling still has something to prove after a year-long losing streak with Peter Ian had the public rooting for his eventual demise. That result never came and Sterling successfully defended the belt against TJ Dillashaw in 2022.

Honestly, this is a very difficult match for me to analyze.

Cejudo, of course, excels as a wrestler, which is his best skill set, and it looks like he might have a clear path to a takedown against Sterling, who is defending just 41%. However, Cejudo isn’t much of a submission threat. His takedowns lead to some control and some ground, but he rarely threatens to finish on the mat.

Aljamaine Sterling and Henry Cejudo had to part ways after pre-fight talks in an intense final showdown on Friday ahead of UFC 288.

Sterling defends his bantamweight championship against Cejudo, who returns to action for the first time in more than three years, in the main event of Saturday’s pay-per-view at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

With UFC President Dana White in the middle, Sterling and Cejudo traded insults and fight predictions during the UFC 288 official weigh-ins. The champion put his fingers in Cejudo’s mouth before the challenger pushed his hand back, causing Sterling to quickly shove each other before them. was isolated.

While speaking with Joe Rogan, Cejudo told the Newark crowd that he plans to eat at a local pizzeria on Saturday for a different meal.

“Tomorrow night I’m going to eat Jamaican jerk chicken,” Cejudo said. “Stay beautiful and new.”

With a win, Sterling would become the first bantamweight to defend his title three times in a row, and he predicted he would etch his name into the UFC history books.

“I’m going to crush this guy ‘Triple Zero’ tomorrow night,” Sterling said. “‘Triple-Zero’ goes down tomorrow night. I’m making history here on the East Coast as a three-time defending champion, baby.
